The Sunday Salon: 8.9

Happy Sunday book lovers! Today is the beginning of a new week and new books! The last few weeks I've found myself in a sort of slump. I read some really good books then all at once I just stopped. I didn't pick up a book for one solid week and barely read anything last week. That is just not like me. One reason might be that the book I had started reading just wasn't doing it for me. It was THE NIGHT GARDENER by George Pelecanos. I normally don't do this, but after almost 100 pages, I quit reading it. I just couldn't connect with the characters or the story. Maybe I'll pick it up again one day, but for now I'm moving on.

Even though I didn't read last week, I did manage to post my review of NO ONE YOU KNOW by Michelle Richmond. You can find that review here. I got three books in the mail last week that I'm excited about, so I'm hoping this slump is over. I also made a trip to the used bookstore and found a copy of THE SHADOW OF THE WIND by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I recently became aware of this book through Book Chatter and Other Stuff and I feel pretty lucky to have found a used copy so easily!

For today, when I get back from church I'm cracking open one of the new books that arrived last week. I'll have more details on them in tomorrow's post but for now I have to run and get ready. I'm already feeling like I'm getting back in my groove - I think this is going to be a great reading week!

  1. Can't wait to hear what books you got in the post, that are pulling you out of your reading slump.

  2. I totally understand reading slumps. I was in one earlier this summer, but it seems to have passed now. I truly think the secret is to read what you want to read. Life is too short to stick with a book that "isn't working". You can always pick it up another time.

The Shadow of the Wind is a book that has been on my shelves for quite a while. I look forward to reading your review.

  3. Here's to a good week! Shadow of the Wind has been on my shelf for a long time now...not sure why I haven't picked it up yet.

  4. I think you did the right think with stopping if you weren't enjoying it. There are so many books to be read, there isn't time for all of them, so you might as well be choosy!

  5. Slumps are all right and also letting go of books which aren't holding your interest, IMHO. :) I've read Pelecanos and he can be a little rough around the edges. I much prefer Michael Connelly myself, who seems to be a lot more polished in his writing.

  6. If a book doesn't really grab me by page 50 or so, I always think it's best just to put it aside and move on. And don't look back. There are just way too many other great books out there, waiting. Haven't read any Pelecanos, but Shadow of the Wind is one of my all-time faves. Hope you enjoy it, too.

  7. I have dry spells every now and then when it comes to reading. I'm either reading at full speed (book after book) or not reading at all. There seems to be no in-between.

  8. July was slack for me. I read only 7 books. August is better. I have read already 5!

TSS: Tommy Gun Tango by Brant Randall/Bruce Cook

  9. Lisa, a slump will do that to you every time. It sometimes makes it really hard to get into another book. I hope you pick up a good one this time and get back in your groove. Have a great week!

  11. We all have slumps sometimes. I had a small one the week before last because of some things going on in my life.
