The Sunday Salon: My First Post

This is my first post for The Sunday Salon and I've really been looking forward to it. I'm kind of new to the whole book blogging thing. Lisa, over at Books On The Brain was one of the first fellow-bloggers I 'met' online. She is quite an inspiration. I really enjoy her blog posts and you can always count on a good recommendation from her. Since I was a little girl, I've always loved to read, but I re-discovered my love of books with a new intensity a few years ago. There just isn't enough time to read all the wonderful books out there!

This morning I got up early, partly because I like it (dawn in my favorite time of day) and partly because my new kitten doesn't know the difference between getting up for work during the week and being able to sleep in on the weekends! Anyway . . . The book I'm reading now is THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES by Sue Monk Kidd. I know I'm probably one of the few people left in the world who hasn't already read it. I'm about two-thirds of the way into it. I put a big dent in it this morning, reading 80 pages so far today. I don't want to say too much about it now because I'll be posting my full review after I finish, but I will say this: I LOVE THIS BOOK!! What a wonderful storyteller she is! You know how when you're reading a book with a title that you just don't get? (Like THE KITE RUNNER, I never knew what a kite runner was!) Then you get to the chapter that makes it all click and it makes sense then? That's my favorite part of reading. When it all comes together. Well, that happened this morning while reading chapter 8. The whole secret life of the bees was explained and Lily and me got it at the same time. It is an important moment and just another reason this is a wonderfully written book. I can't wait to get back to it and finish.

Next week I'll be reading a brand new book by Garth Stein called THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN. I've heard so much about this book and I'm really excited about reading it. Its getting rave reviews. But more on that next week. I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday! Happy Reading!

  1. Welcome to the Salon. Animals just don't get this whole weekend thing, do they? A friend of mine has a rescue dog who insists that he not only gets up at 6.00 every morning but that he is out walking her by 6.15. There would have to be some serious talking to being done there if she were my dog! I'm glad you've enjoyed 'The Secret Life of Bees', it's a great book.

  7. Welcome to the Salon!

I haven't read Monk's books yet...but I only read great things about them. I guess I'll have to read one soon!

I'll be interested to read your review of Racing in the Rain which I keep picking up and thumbing through every time I go into the bookstore.

My animals don't know the difference between week days and weekends either! Good thing they're fuzzy and cute :)

  8. Welcome to the Salon! I read the Kidd book a few years ago and enjoyed it. Can't remember anything about it except the color yellow? Was there a yellow house?

  9. Hi Lisa, thanks for the shout out!! What a nice surprise!

Welcome to the Sunday Salon. I've only been doing it for a few weeks but it's really fun!

The Secret Life of Bees was one my book club really enjoyed. Did you know the movie is coming out in October? Dakota Fanning will play Lily.

  10. Welcome to the Salon. You are not the last person to read The Secret Life of Bees because I haven't read it yet. I will be reading it soon. I bought it last year and still have not read it. But I did read The Mermaid's Chair, also by Kidd, which I LOVED! I have no idea if they are similar or not but I am really looking forward to Bees. I guess I am just biding my time for the perfect moment to read it.

  11. Thank you all so much for the warm welcome to TSS. To any of you who said they haven't read Bees yet - don't put it off any longer! Its a great read!

Wendy - I've only heard great things about Racing in the Rain. I hope it lives up to the hype.

Smallworld - no, the house in Bees is Pepto Pink - but the book cover is yellow-ish! :)

Lisa - I did NOT know about the movie coming out. Dakota Fanning is the perfect choice for the role IMO. I think I'm really going to enjoy participating in TSS.

Megan - I haven't read any other books by SM Kidd. I'll put Mermaids Chair on my TBR list. Thanks for the recommendation.

I look forward to next weeks Salon, but until then have a great reading week everyone!!
