What's the saddest book you've read recently?
Well, a few come to mind, but the most sad book was TOMATO GIRL by Jayne Pupek that I read last year. I was literally in tears by the end. Even though it was a sad story about a little girl being forced to grow up way too fast because her parents were not able to take proper care of her for differing reasons, it is one of my all-time favorite books. It sounds strange that such a sad book could be a 'favorite', but this book really moved me, mainly because of Jayne Pupek's extraordinary writing. [Review here]
More recently I read THE LAST BRIDGE by Teri Coyne, another debut novel that blew my socks off! That book grabbed a hold of me and didn't let go. [Review here]
Lastly, DIRTY LITTLE ANGELS by Chris Tusa is a book I just read a few weeks ago. The circumstances of this story about a teenager living in the slums of New Orleans was very sad and shocking at times. This is a great example of contemporary fiction that doesn't hold back. [Review here]

I've been a sucker of tear-jerker, both books and movies. I've got Marley and Me and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Now I have to check out Tomato Girl. Several bloggers have raved about the book which I have yet to find at the store. :)
ReplyDeleteAll of these sound interesting, although probably a little too intense for me. But I know a lot of people have really loved The Last Bridge.
ReplyDeleteThree really good recommendations!
ReplyDeleteThere's 'sad-touching' and 'sad-depressing' and I seem to recall more 'sad-depressing' novels than the other type. One of them was Angela's Ashes. Lord...do you remember that one? I was so depressed after reading it. Another was The Road yet I cannot wait to see the movie in October.
ReplyDeleteGood picks! I just received Dirty Angels in the mail yesterday.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this topic today I also thought of The Last Bridge...that was a great book!
ReplyDelete3 new ones for me!
ReplyDeleteSad books can be good sometimes :) I'm looking to bring a little sunshine into my future reading though!
ReplyDeleteTomato Girl is sad, but I loved it too.
ReplyDeleteAll three books sound great--the only one I've heard of before is Tomato Girl but the last one on your list sounds right up my alley. Any book about New Orleans or set in New Orleans is something I want to read!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about saying a sad book is a good one or that you like it. I always have that problem, but it's about liking the way the story is told.
ReplyDeleteI think sad books make good reads too.
ReplyDeleteBooking Through Sad Ones
I haven't really read that many sad books this year- this was a tough one for me to pick! Your choices look very interesting, especially Tomato Girl. I heard so much about it when it came out & never quite got around to it myself. Thanks for bringing it up!
ReplyDeleteI am almost at the end of The Elegance of the Hedgehog and am waiting to see if it's sad or how I'll feel about it. Did a review before I got to the very end of the book, just so I'd not give away the end of the plot and write a spoiler (a clever suggestion I read from a blogger).
ReplyDeleteOh I've been hoping to read The Last bridge!! BTW: Your Tuesday teaser sounds fun; enjoy.
ReplyDeleteLast Bridge was phenomenal for sure!!! Tomato Girl was fantastic too. I think my saddest read this year is The Blue Notebook.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of the Last Bridge, that looks AMAZING, I added to my LibraryThing. Tomato Girl also captured my attention. Thank you. I'm currently reading The Glass Castle, a sad memoir but written so beautifully about a girl on a dysfunctional family journey.
ReplyDeleteI just completed "Milkweed" by Jerry Spinelli-a young adult novel set in the Warsaw Ghetto-it is very uplifting and at the same time heartbreaking.
