Here's my answers:

• What am I currently reading?  I've got a few books going right now. One is A BETTER PLACE by Barbara Hall, who is also the Executive Producer of the new CBS drama Madam Secretary. I also just started Stephen King's A GOOD MARRIAGE. I saw the movie trailer and I instantly wanted to read it.  I'm also listening to Billy Crystal's STILL FOOLIN' 'EM, which is a memoir about his life. It is laugh out loud funny!
• What did you recently finish reading? I just finished listening to BIG LITTLE LIES by Liane Moriarty.  My review is here if you'd like to read it. 
• What are you planning to read next?  I want to re-read GARDEN SPELLS by Sarah Addison Allen before FIRST FROST comes out in January. I also want to read BLISS HOUSE by Laura Benedict. The next audiobook I plan to listen to is THE SILENT SISTER by Diane Chamberlain.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Happy Monday everyone! This fun, weekly meme is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. We discuss what books we've read/reviewed in the past week and talk about what we are planning
 to read in the days ahead. 

I recently took a break from my normal life and took a trip to Columbus, Ohio to visit some family and friends. Although I took some books with me, I didn't read a single page while there, so my reading has really suffered. To make it worse, I am completely overwhelmed with review copies at the moment, so now I'm scrambling to get caught up. I did manage to make some progress this past week however. 

Books I Finished and Reviewed Last Week:

I only finished one book last week. It was my book club selection (She Reads Book Club). It's a brand new release by Patti Callahan Henry called AND THEN I FOUND YOU. It's a quick but emotional story about unplanned pregrnancy, adoption and family. This is Callahan-Henry's ninth book, but a first for me. The story was inspired by true events in the author's family, so it had a realness to it that was unmistakable. I posted my review yesterday and you can find it here.  

Books I'm Focusing On This Week:

I'm looking forward to really making a dent in my book pile this week. Lucky for me, all the books I'm scheduled to read are ones I've been anxious to get my hands on! That's always a plus, isn't it? My main focus is going to be on BLOOD MONEY by Doug Richardson from DIE HARD fame. I am only a few chapters in at this point, but it is sure to be an intense thriller. Another book I'll be reading this week is SWIMMING AT NIGHT by Lucy Clarke. Its a debut novel published by Touchstone about two sisters who have unresolved conflicts between them. But when one sister disappears while traveling abroad, the other sister refuses to believe her sister took her own life and sets out to find the truth. This book grabbed my attention when I first learned about it and I'm very anxious to get started on it. (Click on title link for more info)

I'll also be finishing up the audio I've been listening to the past few days. It's Harlan Coben's stand-alone novel, SIX YEARS. I am a newbie to his work and since this is a stand-alone, I thought it would be the perfect way to get to know his writing. I'm half-way through the book now. Its an intriguing story and I'm enjoying it very much.

Its Monday! What Are You Reading?

Books I Read and Talked About Last Week -

I finished reading THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER by Stephen Chbosky last week. The book is made up of a series of letters written by 16-year old Charlie over the course of a year. One reason I wanted to read the book is that I wanted to watch the movie version starring Paul Rudd (who I have a crush on) but I wanted to have already read the book. 

I posted a review of ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE by Jess Riley last week. It's a humorous look at one family's dysfunction that also deals with some serious topics. I encourage you to check it out. 

If you follow me on Twitter, (@SouthrnGrlReads) you'll know that last week I talked alot about Julie Kibler's debut, CALLING ME HOME, last week. It is our February selection for She Reads Book Club and it was a fantastic choice. 

I started reading Sarah Jio's BLACKBERRY WINTER and I know I'm going to really like it. 

Books I'll Be Focusing On This Week -

My main focus is going to be on THE SILENCE OF BONAVENTURE ARROW by Rita Leganski. I started it last evening and right away the lovely lyrical prose is blowing me away! Not to mention the mystical locale of New Orleans and all that that entails. This will definitely be a real treat for my literary senses. 

I will also continue reading BLACKBERRY WINTER this week. I'm hooked on it! Now I know what all the fuss was about when it was making a loud splash on the blogs.

Reviews I'll be posting this week are THE RIVER WITCH by Kimberly Brock and THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER by Stephen Chbosky.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly meme is hosted by Sheila @ One Person's Journey Through A World of Books. it's a place where we discuss what books we've read in the last week and what we plan to read this week.

Last week was a great week! I read and posted a review of one of the most interesting books I've read recently. I didn't know at first what to expect because the book is centered in and around the world of art and I am not well versed in it at all. But THE ART FORGER by B.A. Shapiro took off immediately and I was completely drawn in. I had difficulty putting this one down. Loved the characters, the story, the writing, the locale, but most of all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the art and having a bit of an art history lesson along with a lesson in forgery.. The book was fascinating. You can find my review of THE ART FORGER here.  This book is the January selection for She Reads Book Club that I am honored to be a part of and you can read the reviews of our other members here. You can also find a great guest post by B.A. Shapiro discussing why she chose to write this book. 

Last week I finished reading CALLING MY HOME, a terrific debut by Julie Kibler. It's the story of two unlikely friends traveling from Texas to Ohio to attend a funeral. Isabelle is in her eighties and her friend who drives her on this trip is Dorrie, a thirty-something African-American single mom of two almost-grown kids. Dorrie doesn't have a lot of details about the trip, she doesn't even know whose funeral they are attending, but along the way, Isabelle tells the story of her life while Dorrie deals with some serious issues in her own life. The journey brings the two women close together but also shows the divide this country still has between races. 

This week, I'll be reading a new book by Jess Riley, the author of DRIVING SIDINGS that I absolutely loved! Her new book, ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE is the story of a family, broken by loss and deep-rooted tensions that grow within a family. It all comes to a head at Thanksgiving and the situation seems hopeless. I've just started reading, but in usual Jess Riley style, this potentially sad subject is tackled with her clever wit and entertaining writing. I am sure this book will be everything I expect it to be. I love Jess Riley's sense of humor and it certainly comes through strongly in this new book. If you act quickly, you can pick this gem up at the Kindle store for just 2.99.

The Sunday Salon: A New Season

Happy Sunday and welcome to Books and Cooks! September brings a new season and along with it comes excitement! I'm looking forward to the next few months for a few different reasons. First, as you know, I've had a difficult summer with the loss of my father after a long battle with cancer. Its been hard to get used to the loss but we are taking it a day at a time. I'm hopeful that with the new season, it will bring a fresh start for my family.  With September also comes the college football season, which I am especially excited about. The first games were yesterday and my team, the University of Florida Gators did not disappoint. Although it wasn't a great match-up, a Win is a Win! We'll take it!

With everything going on, I still managed to read a few really good books in the last few months. The latest one was CROOKED LETTER, CROOKED LETTER by Tom Franklin. I'll be posting that review in the next day or so. Many of you told me it was a great book and you were right! Southern Fiction is my favorite genre and Tom Franklin did a terrific job. But more on that later this week.

I'm reading a new novel by John Hart right now. It's called IRON HOUSE. I became a big fan of his work after reading THE LAST CHILD a few years ago. His writing was poignant and gripping and so far this new book has proven to be equally as good. The story revolves around two brothers, Michael and Julian, who were abandoned as babies and grew up in an orphanage in North Carolina until Michael, who is the oldest, was ten years old. Julian, being younger and not as strong as his brother was always being tormented by the older boys. But Michael was there to protect him - most of the time. Tragedy struck one winter night and Michael was forced to run away from Iron House, leaving Julian behind. The story continues as Michael, now a grown man, working for the man who took him off the streets of New York as a boy, now wants out of the dangerous and violent life he was brought in to all those years ago.

I'm really enjoying this story so far and it promises to only get better. If you have never read John Hart and you like suspenseful, edge of your seat Southern Fiction, you should definitely check him out.

As for today, I have a very relaxing day planned.  When I'm not flapped out in my comfy chair with my book, I'll be online playing Scrabble with my cousin in Texas.  (She is the queen of Scrabble, but I'm beating her at the moment!)  John is away at a bow shoot, so its very quiet here today. • What are you currently reading?

I just started reading THE LITTLE STRANGER by Sarah Waters. I've seen mixed reviews of it but what draws me to it is the story of Hundreds Hall and the Gothic nature of the writing. I'm also listening to THE CYPRESS HOUSE by Michael Koryta. It is very good so far.

• What did you recently finish reading?

I recently finished CLEANING NABOKOV'S HOUSE by Leslie Daniels that just came out this month. This is a debut novel and I will have my review very soon.

• What are you planning to read next?

I'm currently on a waiting list at the library for WINTERS BONE by Daniel Woodrell and I hope to get to it soon. If not, I have another review book, THE TRINITY SIX by Charles Cumming that I am very excited to read. The Washington Post gave it a great review and besides, I'm in the mood for a really good crime mystery.

I am just about finished with a Nancy Martin book called OUR LADY OF IMMACULATE DECEPTION. Its a spin-off of her Blackbird Sisters Mysteries, but don't worry if you haven't read them because this series stands all on its own. Its full of quirky, fun characters and Roxy Abruzzo, the protagonist is a tough gal who makes her own rules.

I'm also listening to the audio book ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY by David Sedaris. I'm three-quarters of the way done and I'm really enjoying it.

• What did you recently finish reading?

I recently finished THE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MURDER by Joanne Fluke. This is the first book in the Hannah Swensen Series and you can read my review here. Its a cozy mystery and its also filled with yummy cookie recipes as an added bonus! I also finished listening to THE KITCHEN HOUSE by Kathleen Grissom, which I loved. I'll have that review very soon and I'd love for you to come back and check it out.

• What do you plan to read next?

Next on my list is GHELLOW ROAD by T.H. Waters, a book I received from the author for review. Its a novel based on her life and from the reviews I've seen, it has done very well. I'll also be listening to another audio book, THE CYPRESS HOUSE by Michael Koryta and I'm very excited about it!

The Sunday Salon: A Super Day!

Hello and Happy Sunday! I can't believe that it's Super Bowl time already! Since my team didn't make it, I'm rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers today. My sister is having a little get-together at her apartment this evening and I'm planning to stay over night. She just got a huge, new TV that she can see better with so I'm sure the game is going to look awesome on it! I just hope its a good game and not one-sided.

This past week was an interesting one for me. I did something I've never done before and I'm excited about it. Yesterday I completed my first week of Weight Watchers. This is the first 'real' diet I've ever been on and I must say, I find it doable. I was fortunate to be born with my father's tall gene, so at least I have that on my side. I've never really had to worry about my weight until I quit work a few years ago and my activity level plummeted. Sitting around reading books, I've discovered, doesn't burn off many calories! I lost 3 pounds my first week, but I only worked out twice, so that tells me I need to get moving!! The diet itself isn't bad at all. I don't feel like I'm starving myself and I'm eating the right portions, which was always my downfall. I'm excited to get this second week underway and hope to lose 4 pounds by next Saturday. The Weight Watchers website is amazing and filled with all kinds of tips, recipes and community support. I would encourage anyone who needs to shed a few unwanted pounds to consider Weight Watchers. Its better than I expected. I'll be sure to keep you posted on my progress. I'm sure there will be times when I am frustrated but right now I'm feeling pretty good.

My book week wasn't as productive as I'd hoped, but I did manage to finish THE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MURDER by Joanne Fluke. I also started another audio book that I listen to while I work out. I'm listening to ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY by David Sedaris. It makes the time go by so fast, plus I'm laughing much of the time. Last week I finished THE KITCHEN HOUSE by Kathleen Grissom, but I haven't had time to sit down and write my review. I plan to do that Monday, so please look for that review soon. The book I'm reading now is a mystery by Nancy Martin called OUR LADY OF IMMACULATE DECEPTION. It's a spin-off of her Blackbird Sisters Mystery series that I love. I'm reading that while I wait for my review copy of GHELLOW ROAD by T.H. Waters to arrive. Hopefully, this week will provide me with more reading time.

It's time for me to get busy and make some vegetable soup, then I have to make some South Georgia Caviar to take to Linda's for the game. Ever since I made it the first time several years ago, my friends and family request it every time we have a party! They're hooked!

I'm reading a fun mystery by Joanne Fluke. It's the first in her Hannah Swensen Mystery Series called THE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MURDER. There are actually 14 books in the series, which started in 2000, with a new book coming out within the month called THE DEVILS FOOD CAKE MURDER. I have a ways to go to catch up, but I'm sure it will be a fun ride!

• What did you recently finish reading?

Yesterday I finished THE KITCHEN HOUSE by Kathleen Grissom. I really enjoyed this book based in Virginia in the late 1790's. The story was powerful, yet heartbreaking at times. I listened to the audio version and it was beautifully narrated. I'll have my full review up in a few days, so please come back to check it out.

• What are you planning to read next?

I am expecting a review copy of GHELLOW ROAD by T.H. Waters, any day that I am anxious to start, but in the meantime I'm going to read Nancy Martin's latest mystery, OUR LADY OF IMMACULATE DECEPTION. I've read all of her Blackbird Sisters Mysteries and this one is a spin-off of that series. It should be a perfect read while I wait for the other book to arrive. I really enjoy these fun mysteries in between books with heaver or darker content. It gives me the break I need.

The other day, while browsing the Kindle Store, I came across Joanne Fluke, a writer I've heard so much about yet never read. She writes The Hannah Swensen Mystery Series. Readers have enjoyed her fun bakery murder tales for years and Kindle was offering the first book, THE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MURDER for a steal at $2.99, so I grabbed it. It's a fun, light read that I enjoy between books with heaver content. I'm also starting WATER FOR ELEPHANTS this week. This is a book I simply must not put off reading any longer. I have such high expectations and am really looking forward to it.

• What did you recently finish reading?

I finished two books this week. One was BACK CREEK by Leslie Goetsch [Review] and last night I finished THE GOOD THIEF by Hannah Tinti. I'll be posting that review later in the week.

• What do you plan to read next?

Although it isn't set in stone, I'd really like to read THE QUEEN OF PALMYRA by Minrose Gwin.

Booking Through Thursday: Current Reads

It certainly has been awhile since I've participated in Booking Through Thursday and I must say, I've missed it and its good to be back!

This week's topic is about current reads. Here are the questions:

What are you currently reading? What made you choose it? Are you enjoying it? and Would you recommend it?

My responses:

Right now I'm reading a non-fiction book called FORGIVING TROY: A TRUE STORY OF MURDER, MENTAL ILLNESS, AND RECOVERY by Thom Bierdz. There are a few reasons I chose this book. Initially it was because I received a request from the author to send me a copy for review. Secondly, the author is an actor on the very popular soap opera, The Young & the Restless, which I have watched for many years, so I was familiar with who he was. Thirdly, I was intrigued by the mental illness aspect of the story and was curious to see how it played out. To say I'm enjoying this type of book sounds odd, but yes, it is an extremely insightful, interesting yet heartbreaking story that I am glad I chose to read. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers, especially those who have an interest in mental illness and subsequently, the judicial system with regard to dealing with these cases.

Here are my answers:

• What are you currently reading? I am currently reading BACKSEAT SAINTS by Joshilyn Jackson. I received this book from LibraryThing Early Reviewers so I feel pretty lucky to have snagged a copy. I've only just begun reading, but right away I could tell I was going to like it. It's southern fiction, which I love and the words are just flying off the page. I love the quirky main character, Rose Mae Lolley and I believe the story is going to be one of those that just keeps your mind jumping the whole way through. I've never read Jackson's previous gods In Alabama, where I believe Rose Mae has a small role, but I have a feeling I'll be picking that one up soon too.
• What did you recently finish reading? SWORN TO SILENCE by Linda Castillo. This is a murder mystery set in a small Ohio town with a large Amish community. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the Amish lifestyle and Castillo's no nonsense writing style. I'll be posting my full review in the coming days, so I hope you'll come back and check it out.
• What are you planning to read next? This is a tuffy. I'm torn between several books. It will definitely be one of these: A RELIABLE WIFE by Robert Goolrick, THE QUEEN OF PALMYRA by Minrose Gwin or THE LOST SUMMER OF LOUISA MAY ALCOTT by Kelly O'Connor McNees. I'll probably be dabbling in a couple of these at the same time but I'm really leaning towards THE RELIABLE WIFE. That one has been on my radar for quite some time and I just don't think I can resist the urge when it is staring me down daily from my book stand. Do you have any opinions or thoughts on any of these books? I'd love to know which one you think I should pick up next.

Musing Mondays: Current Reads

Today's musing is: What are you currently reading? Would you recommend it? Is it part of a series? If so, which one? What are you thinking about it? What book(s) would you compare it to, if any?

My response:

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I'm currently reading SWORN TO SILENCE by Linda Castillo. This is a murder mystery set in the small town of Painters Mill, Ohio, which also includes a very large Amish community. The Chief of Police is Kate Burkholder, who was born into an Amish family and lived that life until she became an adult when events happened that she felt left her no choice but to leave. This is the first in a new series by Castillo, who is no stranger to mystery novels. This is the first time I've read her work but it certainly will not be the last. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking for a great story. It can get a little dicey with the descriptions of the murders, but its not so bad that it completely grosses me out. I will definitely be looking forward to more in this series. Because I don't read a lot of murder/mystery books, I don't really have one to compare it with. The Amish twist in the story gives it an originality that I really like, although there has been a trend this past year of books centered around the Amish. Maybe it's because I'm originally from Ohio, near the Amish, that I am enthralled with this story. I've enjoyed the contrast between their way of life and the newer English ways. Also, having an ex-Amish female police chief is something I love about the story.

Another book I'm reading is EAT, PRAY, LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert. I started this book last month while on vacation and while I am enjoying it, I needed to take a break from it for a few weeks. I typically only read one book at a time, but I needed something else while I read this one. This is a book that I will have to really think about before recommending to anyone. First, I have to finish reading it so my thoughts will be complete. But even now, being only half way through it, I believe it isn't for everyone. I believe it's the type of book that you either love or hate. I haven't decided yet, though I'm leaning in one direction. You'll have to come back at a later time and read my review to find out how I feel about this one.

Here are my answers:

• What are you currently reading? I am reading two books right now. One was sent to me by the publisher for review and the other one I picked up from the library. The review copy I have is HUSH by Kate White. Not to be confused with Karen White (of Tradd Street fame). Some of you may know that not only is Kate White a best-selling novelist, she is also the Editor in Chief of Cosmopolitan Magazine. HUSH is a page-turning thriller about a Marketing Consultant who finds herself smack-dap in the middle of a murder investigation when she discovers her brand new lover murdered in the bed they'd just made love in. As if that weren't bad enough, her soon-to-be ex-husband has just filed for sole custody of their two young children. The other book I'm reading is an old classic that a friend suggested I read. It's Kurt Vonnegut's BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS. I've only just started it but already I'm appreciating his unique style not to mention his humor and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
• What did you recently finish reading? I've finished two books in the last week. One was ETRE THE COW by Sean Kenniff, a TLC Book Tour pick. You can find that review here. The other book I finished was SOUTH OF BROAD by Pat Conroy. That was also sent to me by TLC. I'll be posting my review on April 12th so please stop by.
• What are you planning to read next? I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of ON FOLLY BEACH by Karen White. This is her latest stand alone novel set to be released May 4th. I've become quite a fan of hers and I'm really looking forward to this new book. And just for fun, I'm hoping to get back to the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Series that I've gotten away from lately. Those books are simply just plain fun for me.

Last week was a great reading week for me and I'm hoping to keep up the momentum through this week as well. I finished two books last week . . .

JANEOLOGY by Karen Harrington - I'm so glad I finally read this book. It's a very interesting subject matter in a compelling story. I'll be posting my review in a few days.

THE HOUSE ON TRADD STREET by Karen White - I've had this book on my TBR list for so long and I'm glad I've finally read it. I just love the cover of this one! You can read my review here.

THE GIRL ON LEGARE STREET by Karen White - This is the sequel to THE HOUSE ON TRADD STREET that was released last November.

HUSH: A NOVEL by Kate White - I received this advanced copy from AuthorsOnTheWeb last week and have just begun reading it so I don't know too much about it yet.
