This is Rebecca's first week hosting Musing Mondays and I'd just like to say good luck to her! Here's this weeks musing:
How do you feel about wide-spread reading phenomenons - Harry Potter, for instance, or the more current Twilight Saga? Are these books so widely read for a reason, or merely fads or crazes? Do you feel compelled to read - or NOT to read - these books because everyone else is?
Personally, I'm not a big fan of the wide-spread phenoms. I haven't read any of the Harry Potter or Twilight books. It's not that I don't think they're worth reading, they're just not my favorite types of books. I guess you could call them fads or crazes, but I've never been one to follow fads. I would rather spend my time reading a book I'm really interested in - there are just way too many great books out there that I want to read than to spend time reading something just because its the 'in' thing to read.
I have to mention one thing though and I'm not sure it's relative to this subject, but this reminded me of it. As I was lying in bed the other morning listening to my radio trying to get the cobwebs out of my brain before getting up, I heard two local disc jockeys talking about the new 'Twilight' movie. One was commenting that he'd never heard of it. The other said something like: 'I guess it's taken from some books some lady wrote.' Wow! I'm sure Stephanie Meyer really appreciated that. I don't even read her books and I was irritated for her. I really wanted to call them up and tell them what idiots I thought they were. But then again, maybe I'm just too touchy about it because I'm a reader.

I haven't gotten into Twilight but I love Harry Potter.
ReplyDeleteIf YA fantasy and vamps aren't your thing, don't bother! I read the HP books as they came out, but fantasy is one of my top genres.
ReplyDeletehahaha! I get irritated too when I hear DJs talking about something they're probably supposed to be promoting and don't know anything about it! Not just books, but anything. In general, DJs just annoy me anyway. That's why I listen to so much NPR!
ReplyDeleteI actually love fantasy, it's the genre I always start in at the bookstore though I enjoy other styles as well. But that's more likely the reason I enjoyed Harry Potter so much and didn't like Twilight. Maybe it's just too romance-y for me.
Thanks so much for your good wishes!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you're too sensitive - unless we all are! Want annoys me most, is when the workers in the BOOK STORE don't know. That bugs me.
That DJ thing would have bothered me, too. I try to stay on top of pop culture, but I feel that the people in the media should know about trends before I do.
ReplyDeleteBermudaonion - I will never read Twilight, but Harry Potter? Maybe one day.
ReplyDeleteBeth F - Vamps are most certainly not my thing - I don't know why, they just creep me out. I read 'Interview With a Vampire' a long time ago, but after that I tried to read 'Taltos' and couldn't do it. Go figure!
Tonya & Rebecca - I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets annoyed at others' ignorance. I don't mean to be a book snob, but if you're going to talk about something on the air, do your homework, man!! LOL
It just shows how ignorant those people are. Kills me that reading is still looked down upon in some places :(
ReplyDeleteDani and Lady Tink - That's exactly how I feel! I get really irritaed when I hear people going on about something they know nothing about, especically when they look down on books/reading.
